25 Years of the European Ombudsman - Digital conference

European Ombudsman

Moderator: Shada Islam, Director, New Horizons Project

The European Ombudsman is marking its 25th anniversary with a digital conference on the evolving role of an increasingly effective and influential office. Ombudsman Emily O’Reilly, and a high-level panel of speakers, will explore how best to monitor the EU administration as it deals with major current and future challenges.

The keynote address will be given by European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič, in charge of inter-institutional relations and foresight.

This event is open to national and regional ombudsmen from all over Europe, as well as MEPs, civil society representatives, academics, EU officials and other interested participants.

The European Ombudsman helps thousands of citizens each year through handling complaints and replying to requests for information. Inquiries opened by Ms O’Reilly concern issues ranging from decision making transparency, to access to documents, and conflicts of interest. The Ombudsman’s powers include the right to inspect EU documents, call officials to testify, and to open inquiries on her own initiative.

The conference will be webstreamed. Join the Twitter debate at: #EO25Years
